Independent price guides for US homeowners

LocalGoingRate publishes what home repairs and upgrades really cost, city by city, so you can judge a quote before you sign it.

In numbers

  • 19 home trades, from plumbers to solar
  • 195 US cities, each priced for its own wages, permits and climate
  • 73+ public price sources behind the busiest guide
  • Re-checked every edition, and every page shows the month it was verified (November 2026)
  • Free to use, no sign-up

Why we exist

Ask what a plumber costs and you usually get a range so wide it's useless, or a page run by a marketplace that sells your number to four or five contractors. We wanted one place that shows what jobs really cost in your city, before you call anyone, and a way to get quotes without being flooded with calls.

What we do

We price 19 home trades, from plumbers and electricians to water heaters, HVAC, solar, home batteries and EV chargers, in 195 US metros. Every page shows a low, typical and high price, the jobs people actually ask for, and what a fair quote should include. Our quote checker tells you if a price you've been given is fair, and you can ask for quotes from no more than 2 local pros.

How we price

  • We collect prices from 73+ public sources: cost guides, contractor price lists, equipment prices, permit fees, utility programs and federal wage data.
  • No price rests on a single source. National figures are cross-checked, then adjusted for each city's wages, housing costs and local rules.
  • We re-check prices every edition and date every page.
  • The methodology page explains exactly how, and lists the sources.

Independence

  • Nobody can pay to change a price on this site.
  • Pros pay us for quote requests and for a listing, never for a price or a ranking.
  • Paid listings are labeled "Sponsored".
  • We don't take a cut of any job you hire someone for.
  • We never sell your number to a call center or lead reseller. At most 2 pros get a request.

How we make money

When you ask for a quote, we check the job with you by text, then pass it to no more than 2 local pros, and they pay us for it. A pro can also pay a monthly fee to be the only one in their city for their trade, and their listing shows on that city's guide, labeled as sponsored. That's what keeps the guides free.
