Ways to get rid of junk compared: hauler, dumpster or city pickup
How you get rid of it matters as much as how much you have. These are typical national prices.
| Way to get rid of it | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Hauler, eighth of a truck (they load it) | $90–$250 per load | One or two bulky pieces, like a couch or a washer and dryer |
| Hauler, quarter truck | $150–$370 per load | A bedroom set or a corner of the garage |
| Hauler, half truck | $250–$600 per load | Several rooms, a crowded garage, or anything heavy you can't carry |
| Hauler, full truck | $550–$1,100 per load | Moves, big garage or basement cleanouts |
| Dumpster rental (you load it) | $250–$700 per week | Remodels and cleanouts that take several days |
| Dumpster bag (you load it) | $150–$290 per bag | Small projects with room on the driveway |
| Retailer haul-away with a new appliance | $49.99 at Best Buy | Swapping an old fridge, washer or TV for a new one |
| City bulky item pickup | Often free for eligible homes | One or two big items you can carry to the curb and wait for |
A hauler costs the most but does the lifting and is gone the same day. A dumpster or bag is cheaper per yard if you have days to fill it and room to park it. City pickup is the cheapest of all if your city offers it and you can wait.
Common junk removal jobs and what they cost (2026)
Most jobs are smaller than people think. One bulky item runs $60–$175, a half truck $250–$600, and a garage cleanout $250–$600.
| Block or rate | Low | Typical | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| Haul away one couch | $75 | $125 | $250 |
| Haul away a mattress or box spring | $55 | $100 | $150 |
| Remove an old fridge or freezer | $75 | $130 | $220 |
| Remove an upright piano | $200 | $425 | $600 |
| Clear a quarter truck of boxes and clutter | $150 | $225 | $370 |
| Clear a half truck of furniture | $250 | $400 | $600 |
| Fill a full truck | $550 | $750 | $1,100 |
| Cut up and remove a hot tub (1–4 hrs) | $200 | $400 | $800 |
| Clean out a two-car garage (a few hours to a day or two) | $250 | $425 | $600 |
| Clean out a 3-bedroom house (one day to several days) | $1,000 | $1,750 | $2,500 |
Times come from cost guides: a hot tub takes 1–2 hours if small and 3–4 hours if large, a garage a few hours to a day or two, and an estate one day to several days. Most other home junk jobs take one to three hours. What moves a quote most: how much of the truck you fill, how heavy it is, and how far the crew has to carry it.
Junk removal vs dumpster rental vs dumpster bag: which is cheaper?
It depends on how much you have, how fast you need it gone, and whether you'll do the lifting.
| Factor | Junk removal crew | Dumpster rental | Dumpster bag |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | $250–$600 for a half truck | $250–$700 a week | $150–$290 for one bag |
| Who loads it | The crew, from anywhere in the home | You | You |
| How long it takes | Usually done in one visit | Several days to a week on site | Fill it on your own time, then book a pickup |
| Space needed | None | Driveway or street space; a street permit in some cities | A spot the truck can reach |
| Weight limits | Priced by volume; heavy loads cost more | A weight allowance, with extra fees over it | About 3,300 lb, about 3 cubic yards |
| Best for | Furniture, appliances and mixed junk | Remodels and multi-day cleanouts | Small projects and yard debris |
For a day's worth of furniture and boxes, a crew is usually the better deal once you count your time. For a remodel or a cleanout spread over a week, a dumpster wins. A bag fits small jobs where a dumpster is too big.
Keeping it under control: what regular clear-outs cost
Junk builds up. A yearly clear-out costs far less than one big cleanout every few years.
| Item | Low | Typical | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| One quarter-truck clear-out a year | $150 | $225 | $370 |
| Two quarter-truck clear-outs a year | $300 | $450 | $740 |
| One half-truck clear-out a year | $250 | $400 | $600 |
| Dumpster bag for a spring clean-up | $150 | $240 | $290 |
| Private trash service, per month (for comparison) | $25 | $65 | $100 |
If you clear a quarter truck once a year, budget about $225. Check your city's free bulky pickup days too: they can cover the odd couch or mattress at no cost.
What affects junk removal costs
How much of the truck you fill
Volume sets most of the price: $90–$250 for an eighth of a truck, $250–$600 for a half and $550–$1,100 for a full load.
Weight and material
Dirt, concrete, roofing and drywall cost more to dump, so remodel debris runs $300–$900 a truckload.
Items with disposal fees
Fridges and freezers need their refrigerant removed ($75–$220 each), and mattresses, tires and electronics carry fees at many dumps and recyclers.
Stairs and access
Upper floors, long carries and tight basements take more labor; one pricing guide puts extra-labor and stair charges at about $50–$150.
Local dump fees
Landfill fees averaged $56.80 a ton nationally in 2023, from $84.44 in the Northeast to $43.18 in the Southeast (EREF). Haulers pass those costs on.
Your city
Labor and dump fees move the price. A typical half load runs about $525 in New York and $500 in Los Angeles, against $310 in Phoenix and $375 in Houston.
How to save on junk removal
- Check your city's bulky pickup. Many cities collect couches, mattresses and other big items at the curb for free or a small fee. Los Angeles and New York both do.
- Do one big trip.A full truck ($750 typical) costs less than two half loads ($800).
- Ask for a load price for three or more items.A couch, a mattress and a fridge priced one by one come to about $355; a quarter truck holding all three is $225.
- Let the store take the old appliance.Retailers often haul the old one away when they deliver a new one; Best Buy charges $49.99.
- Donate what still works.Charities often pick up good furniture for free, and every piece they take is one you don't pay to haul.
- Skip the same-day rush.Same-day jobs can add $50–$150. Book a few days ahead and compare two or three quotes.

Junk removal cost in the USA by load size
An eighth of a truck is about $90–$250, a half truck $250–$600, and a full truck $550–$1,100, crew and disposal included.
Worked example: two quarter loads at $225 each come to $450. One half load holding the same junk is $400, so splitting a job into two trips costs about $50 more.
The bigger the load, the less you pay per cubic yard. A full truck at $750 costs less than two half trucks at $400 each ($800), because the crew, the drive and the dump trip happen once.
What a junk removal quote should include
A real junk removal quote answers all of these. If it answers fewer than six, ask before the crew starts loading.
- One all-in price, not just the minimum or a per-yard rate
- How much of the truck the price covers, and the price if it's more
- Dump, recycling and disposal fees for everything on the list
- Extra fees for fridges, mattresses, tires, TVs or heavy debris
- Charges for stairs, long carries or taking things apart
- Tear-down work like hot tubs or sheds, priced separately
- What they donate or recycle, and whether you get receipts
- The arrival window, and a sweep-up when they're done
- Proof of license and insurance
