Does junk removal cost by truck load change by city?
Yes. The same job costs more where labor and rent cost more. Here's how junk removal prices in the biggest US metros compare with the US typical of $400.
Junk removal prices in the 12 biggest US metrosEach city's typical junk removal price against the US typical of $400.
Most junk trucks hold about 15–20 cubic yards, and haulers split the bed into eighths. The crew looks at your pile, says how much of the truck it will fill, and gives you the price for that slice. The price covers the crew, the loading, the drive and normal dump fees.
For a sense of size: an eighth of a truck is about one couch or a washer and dryer. A half truck holds the furniture from a couple of rooms or a crowded single garage. A full truck is a big garage or most of a home move-out.

What changes the price
Weight is the big one after volume. Dirt, concrete, roofing and drywall cost more to dump, so remodel debris runs $300–$900 a truckload. Items with their own disposal fees, like fridges, mattresses and tires, add to the load price.
Labor matters too. Stairs without an elevator, long carries and tight basements take longer; one pricing guide puts stair and extra-labor charges at about $50–$150, and same-day service at $50–$150 on top of the normal rate.

Compare
Load price vs per-item price
For one or two things, a per-item price is usually cheaper. Past that, the load price wins: a couch, a mattress and a fridge priced one by one add up to about $355, while a quarter truck that holds all three is $225.

How to save
Do one big trip, not two small ones. Two quarter loads cost about $450; one half load is $400. A full truck at $750 is cheaper than two half loads at $800.
Move what you can to the garage or curb, donate furniture that still works, and book a few days ahead. Ask for one all-in price before the crew starts loading.
