Having a hauler take a refrigerator or freezer costs $75–$220, a washer or dryer $50–$175, and a mattress or box spring $55–$150. Fridges cost more because federal rules require the refrigerant to be removed before scrapping.

Does appliance and mattress disposal cost change by city?
Yes. The same job costs more where labor and rent cost more. Here's how junk removal prices in the biggest US metros compare with the US typical of $400.

Fridges, freezers and AC units: the refrigerant rule
Under the federal Clean Air Act rules, the last stop in the disposal chain, such as the scrap yard or landfill, must make sure the refrigerant is recovered before an appliance is crushed. If it arrives already drained, they need a signed statement saying who removed it and when. A sticker alone doesn't count.
That's why haulers charge more for these items ($75–$220), and why some cities take a fridge only with a technician's tag. Houston's heavy trash pickup, for example, takes fridges and freezers only if a certified technician has tagged them as drained.
02
Mattresses: fees, bags and free drop-off
Four states add a recycling fee when you buy a mattress: California $18, Connecticut $19.50 (from Oct. 1, 2026), Oregon $22.50 and Rhode Island $22.50. That fee pays for free drop-off of old mattresses at program sites, so a hauler's charge there should be mostly labor.
New York City picks up mattresses at the curb for free, but they must be sealed in a plastic bag first, or you can be fined up to $300.
03
TVs, computers and tires
TVs and computers often can't go out with the regular trash, so check your city's rules. A hauler charges $45–$150 and takes them to a recycler. Tires cost $5–$25 each, and some haulers add a fee per tire to a load.

How to save
Let the store take the old one when it delivers the new one. Best Buy charges $49.99 with a delivery, or $199.99 to pick up as many as 2 large items on their own. Check your city's bulky pickup and your utility for appliance recycling offers.
