Home Batteries Compared: Powerwall 3, Enphase, FranklinWH and More
The Powerwall 3 is the price most quotes start from at $11,500–$18,500 installed for 13.5 kWh. Here is how the other common batteries compare, with usable capacity and warranty.
| Battery | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Tesla Powerwall 3 — 13.5 kWh | $11,500–$18,500 installed | One box for whole-home backup, built-in solar inverter · 10 yrs, 70% capacity |
| Powerwall 3 Expansion — adds 13.5 kWh | $5,000–$8,000 installed | More hours on the same Powerwall 3 inverter (up to three per unit) |
| Enphase IQ Battery 5P — 5 kWh each | $6,000–$9,000 installed | Stacking small units on Enphase microinverter solar · 15-yr warranty |
| Enphase IQ Battery 10C — 10 kWh | $11,000–$17,000 installed | Enphase homes that want one larger unit · 15 yrs, 60% capacity |
| FranklinWH aPower 2 — 15 kWh | $14,500–$23,000 installed | Big loads and long outages, works with most solar · 15 yrs, 70% capacity |
| SolarEdge Home Battery — 9.7 kWh | $12,000–$20,000 installed | Homes that already have a SolarEdge inverter · 10 yrs, 70% capacity |
| Other ~10 kWh batteries (EG4, EcoFlow, Fox ESS, Canadian Solar) | $6,500–$16,500 installed | Lower upfront price; check who services it near you |
| Two batteries — 27–30 kWh | $16,500–$34,000 installed | Larger homes, central AC, well pumps, longer outages |
| Portable power station + transfer panel — about 4 kWh | $4,000–$7,500 installed | A few circuits for a few hours; check the warranty term |
| Standby generator, 20–24 kW (comparison) | $8,500–$16,000 installed | Outages that last days; runs on natural gas or propane |
Per kWh, Tesla is the cheapest of the big brands in EnergySage's 2026 quote data at about $967 per kWh, against $1,232 for FranklinWH, $1,429 for Enphase and $1,532 for SolarEdge. Warranty length is the other big difference: 10 years on Powerwall 3 and SolarEdge, 15 years on Enphase and FranklinWH.
Home Battery vs Standby Generator vs Portable Generator
Three ways to keep the lights on. The right one depends on how long your outages last and whether you want the backup to pay you back.
| Factor | Home battery | Standby generator | Portable generator |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost, installed | $11,500–$18,500 for one 13.5 kWh battery | $8,500–$16,000 for 20–24 kW | $400–$850 for the interlock or transfer switch, plus the generator |
| Fuel and running cost | No fuel. Refills from solar or the grid | About $30–$120 a day in fuel at typical loads, up to $220 a day for a 16–22 kW unit running hard (natural gas or propane) | Gasoline you buy, store and pour in by hand |
| Noise | Silent | Engine noise whenever it runs, plus regular self-tests | Loud. Must run outdoors, away from doors and windows (carbon monoxide) |
| Maintenance | Little: app monitoring, no scheduled service | $150–$300 a year for routine service (oil, filters, battery check) | Oil changes and fresh fuel, done by you |
| How long it covers you | Hours to a day or so per 13.5 kWh; longer if solar recharges it | Days to weeks, as long as gas or propane keeps flowing | As long as you keep refueling it |
| Permits | Electrical permit, often a building or fire review; utility approval if tied to solar | Electrical and gas permits; some towns check setbacks | Electrical permit for the interlock in most places |
| Pays you back? | Can: time-of-use savings and utility battery programs | No | No |
A battery if you have solar, time-of-use rates or a utility program that pays for batteries, and outages are short. A standby generator if you lose power for days at a time and have natural gas. A portable generator and an interlock if you want cheap insurance and do not mind running it yourself.
