Does battery permits and installation fees change by city?
Yes. The same job costs more where labor and rent cost more. Here's how home battery prices in the biggest US metros compare with the US typical of $14750.
Home battery prices in the 12 biggest US metrosEach city's typical home battery price against the US typical of $14,750.
An electrical permit at minimum. Many cities add a building or fire review, and your utility needs to approve the system if it ties into solar or can send power to the grid. Permit and interconnection fees together run $150–$1,000 on a typical job, and the installer normally files them. As one example, Phoenix's fire department charges a minimum of $390 for an over-the-counter permit on a home battery of more than 3 kWh up to 27 kWh, and bigger systems need plan review ($390) plus inspection ($195).
Ask whether the quote includes the permit, the inspection and the utility application. If it does not, add the fees and the time they take.
02
Code rules that can add cost
Model residential codes keep batteries out of bedrooms and living space, limit each unit to 20 kWh, and cap the total at 40 kWh in a utility closet or basement and 80 kWh in a garage or on an outside wall.
A garage install may need impact protection, such as bollards, where a car could hit the unit, and some states, including California, require a heat alarm. Your city's adopted code decides, so ask the installer what the inspector will want.
03
What installation labor covers
Labor covers mounting, wiring to the panel, the backup switch or gateway, commissioning and app setup: about $3,300–$8,500 on top of the battery. One national cost analysis puts typical labor at about $6,100.
Panel work is priced separately. A critical-loads subpanel is $400–$1,750 and a 100A to 200A upgrade is $1,500–$4,500.
04
How long the paperwork takes
Most battery installs take a single day with a two-person crew. The utility's permission to operate typically takes a few days to a few weeks, and the permit and inspection add their own wait, so ask for a realistic timeline in writing.
Do not pay most of the price before the permit is issued. A fair payment schedule ties the bigger payments to install and to final inspection.

Watch out
Red flags
A quote with no permit line, an installer who suggests skipping the permit, or one who is not licensed for electrical work in your state. Unpermitted batteries can cause trouble with insurance and when you sell the house.

Battery permits and installation fees: FAQ
Do I need a permit to install a home battery?
Yes, in almost every US city: an electrical permit at minimum, often with a building or fire review. Fees and utility paperwork run $150–$1,000 on a typical job.
Who pulls the permit for a battery?
The installer usually files the permit and the utility application and meets the inspector. Ask for that in writing, with the fees shown as their own line.
How much is the labor to install a home battery?
About $3,300–$8,500 for one 13.5 kWh battery, on top of the battery itself. One national cost analysis puts typical labor at about $6,100.
Can a battery go in my garage?
Usually, yes. Model codes allow up to 80 kWh in a garage, keep batteries out of living space and bedrooms, and call for impact protection where a car could hit the unit. Your city's code decides.
Are there yearly fees after a battery is installed?
Usually not. Monitoring runs through the maker's app. Out of warranty, a service visit runs $150–$800.
