US prices, November 2026. Low is a simple job in a low-cost area; high is a bigger job or a high-cost city.

Does tesla powerwall 3 cost change by city?
Yes. The same job costs more where labor and rent cost more. Here's how home battery prices in the biggest US metros compare with the US typical of $14750.
Home battery prices in the 12 biggest US metrosEach city's typical home battery price against the US typical of $14,750.
The battery is the biggest single line: a Powerwall 3 unit on its own costs about $8,200–$10,000, and that part of the price is the same in every state. Labor, wiring and commissioning come to roughly $3,300–$8,500; one national cost analysis puts typical labor at about $6,100.
Backup equipment is the next line. Tesla's Backup Switch, for partial or whole-home backup on a simple service, is about $450 as hardware; the Backup Gateway is about $900–$1,100. Installed, a gateway or transfer switch adds $1,000–$3,500 when it is not already in the quote.

What moves the price up or down
Backup level, the panel and where the battery mounts. Partial backup on a 200-amp panel with a garage wall nearby lands near $11,500. A crowded 100-amp panel adds $1,500–$4,500 for an upgrade, and long wire runs or trenching add labor.
Where you live matters less than you might think: the hardware is priced nationally. EnergySage's 2026 quote data put Tesla at about $967 per kWh, or $13,050 for 13.5 kWh, the lowest of the big brands. Labor rates and installer competition explain most of the gap between cities.

Expansion unit or a second Powerwall 3?
An expansion unit is a Powerwall 3 battery without its own inverter. It adds 13.5 kWh for $5,000–$8,000 installed, and you can add up to three to one Powerwall 3. It adds hours of backup, not more power at once.
A second full Powerwall 3 ($9,000–$12,500 added at install) adds another 11.5 kW of continuous power as well as storage. That matters if you want to start central AC, a well pump or an EV charger on backup. For most homes, one Powerwall 3 plus one expansion ($16,500–$25,000) is the cheaper route to 27 kWh.
04
Specs and warranty
Powerwall 3 stores 13.5 kWh, delivers 11.5 kW continuous and has a solar inverter built in. It uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells.
Tesla's warranty runs 10 years and guarantees at least 70% of the original capacity at the end. Enphase and FranklinWH offer 15 years, so weigh the warranty as well as the price.
05
Tax credits and incentives
The federal 30% Residential Clean Energy Credit, which covered batteries of 3 kWh or more, ended for expenditures made after December 31, 2025. The IRS treats the expense as made when installation is complete, so a battery finished in 2026 gets no federal credit even if you paid in 2025.
Help now comes from utilities and states. California's SGIP, ConnectedSolutions in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, Connecticut's Energy Storage Solutions and New York's NYSERDA rebates still pay toward batteries. Check your utility before you sign.

Watch out
Red flags in a Powerwall quote
One total with no line items. Ask for the battery, the backup equipment (switch or gateway), any panel work, and permit and utility fees as separate lines, so you can compare bids.
No mention of the permit or the utility's approval, a large cash deposit before the permit is issued, or an installer who is not licensed for electrical work in your state. Ask whether the installer is a Tesla Certified Installer and who services the battery locally.

Tesla Powerwall 3 cost: FAQ
Is a Powerwall 3 cheaper than other home batteries?
Usually, per kWh. EnergySage's 2026 quote data put Tesla at about $967 per kWh, against $1,232 for FranklinWH, $1,429 for Enphase and $1,532 for SolarEdge.
How many Powerwalls do I need?
One covers the essentials (fridge, lights, Wi-Fi, furnace fan) for hours to about a day. Whole-home backup with central AC usually takes two units or a Powerwall 3 plus an expansion, $16,500–$34,000 installed.
Can I get a Powerwall 3 without solar?
Yes. It charges from the grid and still gives you backup, for about $11,500–$18,500 installed. Without solar it cannot recharge during a long outage.
How much does it cost to replace a Powerwall after the warranty?
About $10,500–$17,500 for a new battery installed, reusing the backup equipment you already have. A service visit for a fault runs $150–$800.
Is there still a federal tax credit for a Powerwall?
The federal 30% Residential Clean Energy Credit, which covered batteries of 3 kWh or more, ended for expenditures made after December 31, 2025. The IRS treats the expense as made when installation is complete, so a battery finished in 2026 gets no federal credit even if you paid in 2025.
