What to know before you book

What a move-out clean includes

Everything a deep clean covers, in an empty home: inside every cabinet, drawer and closet, baseboards, door frames, light switches, vents, blinds and window sills, plus the bathrooms and kitchen top to bottom.

Inside the oven and fridge are often included, but not always. If they aren't, expect $20–$50 and $20–$60 each. Carpet cleaning is almost always a separate charge: $175–$475 for a 2-bedroom apartment.

What drives the price

Size comes first: $100–$240 for a 1-bedroom apartment up to $280–$650 for a 4-bed house. Condition comes next — grease on the stove, soap scum, pet hair and marks on walls add hours.

Timing matters too. A clean booked for the same day the movers leave, or at the end of the month when many leases end, can be hard to book.

Getting your security deposit back

Your lease and your state's landlord-tenant law decide what a landlord can take from a deposit. Read the move-out section of your lease, and ask for the landlord's checklist.

Take dated photos of every room after the clean, and keep the cleaner's invoice. Before you book, ask whether the company will come back free if the landlord flags something.

Save money

How to keep the bill down

Book the clean after the movers have gone, so the crew isn't working around boxes. Throw out food and trash first. Get a flat price by bedrooms and bathrooms, not an open hourly rate.

Move-out cleaning cost: FAQ

How much does a move-out clean cost for an apartment?

$100–$240 for a 1-bedroom and $140–$330 for a 2-bedroom. Larger or dirtier units cost more.

Is a move-out clean the same as a deep clean?

Close, but done in an empty home and including inside cabinets and drawers. A deep clean of a 3-bed home is $180–$420; a move-out clean of the same house $200–$480.

Does a move-out clean include carpets?

Usually not. Carpet cleaning for a 2-bedroom apartment adds $175–$475, so a move-out clean plus carpets runs about $315–$805.

How long does a move-out clean take?

A few hours for most homes. Published guides give about 2–3 hours for an empty apartment with a crew, and 4–8 hours for a move-out clean in general. Bigger or dirtier homes take longer.

Who pays for move-out cleaning, the tenant or the landlord?

It depends on your lease and your state's law. Read the move-out section of your lease, and ask the landlord for their checklist before you move out.
