What to know before you book

What drives the price

Size is the start: $0.15–$0.50 a sq ft, so 500 sq ft is about $75–$250 at the per-foot rate. But many companies have a minimum of about $100–$250, so small driveways cost the minimum. Pavers, stamped concrete and heavy staining cost more than plain concrete.

Many pros use a surface cleaner, a spinning disc that keeps the spray even and avoids the stripes a wand leaves. Greasy concrete needs hot water and a cleaner, which costs more per sq ft.

Oil, rust and other stains

Plain dirt and mildew come off with pressure. Oil, rust and red clay need a separate treatment, at about $25–$150 a spot. Old oil stains may fade a lot but not vanish; ask the crew what they expect before they start.

Sealing after a wash

A sealer helps concrete shed water, oil and stains. Expect $0.40–$2.10 a sq ft for concrete and $1.00–$2.50 a sq ft to clean and re-seal pavers. Guides suggest resealing every two to three years.

Save money

How to save

Add the walk ($50–$100) or patio ($100–$400) to the driveway visit so one minimum covers all of it. Or do it yourself: a rented machine runs about $50–$175 a day, and a driveway is one of the easier DIY jobs.

Wash water rules

Driveway runoff carries oil and dirt straight to storm drains. Cities including San Diego and Portland, Oregon, ban dirty wash water from storm drains, and San Diego's rule applies to homeowners as well as contractors. Ask the crew how they handle runoff.

Driveway pressure washing cost: FAQ

How often should a driveway be pressure washed?

Guides differ: every one to two years for most homes, and once or twice a year if it's shaded, humid, near trees or used a lot.

Can pressure washing damage concrete?

It can if the pressure is too high or the nozzle too close, leaving stripes or etched spots. A surface cleaner and the right pressure avoid it.

Will pressure washing remove oil stains?

Fresh ones, mostly. Old oil needs a degreaser treatment ($25–$150 a spot) and may still leave a shadow.

Should I seal my driveway after washing it?

It helps it stay clean longer. Concrete sealing runs $0.40–$2.10 a sq ft, and the surface must be fully dry first.

Is it cheaper to pressure wash a driveway myself?

Yes: a rented machine costs about $50–$175 a day against $125–$400 for a pro. A surface cleaner attachment ($20–$50 a day to rent) gives more even results.
