What to know before you book

What drives the price

Size and the number of parts. A chair takes under an hour, a bed frame about two hours, and a desk or dresser one to four hours. Entertainment centers and modular closet systems can take three to six hours or more, and an outdoor swing set six to 10 hours. That's why prices run from $40–$160 for a chair to $150–$450 for a wardrobe.

Compare

Per piece or per hour?

For one or two pieces, a flat price per piece is simplest. For a room full of furniture, ask for an hourly rate ($45–$100/hr) or a half day ($180–$400) — the per-piece price drops a lot once the handyman is already there with tools out. App marketplaces often list lower hourly rates than local handymen.

Extras that add to the bill

Anchoring tall dressers and bookcases to the wall (worth doing in any home with kids), carrying boxes up stairs, hauling away packaging, and mounting shelves or headboards to the wall. Ask what's included before booking.

Missing parts and damaged boxes

Check the box contents against the parts list before the visit. If a part is missing, most handymen stop and bill the time spent; a second visit costs another minimum.

Furniture assembly cost: FAQ

How long does it take to assemble furniture?

Under an hour for chairs and bedside tables, one to two hours for coffee tables and shelving units, about two hours for a bed frame, one to four hours for desks and dressers, and three to six hours or more for entertainment centers and modular closet systems.

Is IKEA furniture assembly more expensive?

Not really — price follows the piece, not the brand. Most people pay about $110 a piece to have IKEA furniture put together, about the same as the $110 typical for any boxed piece. A big wardrobe has more parts, so it costs more: $150–$450.

How much does it cost to assemble a bed?

$70–$160 for a standard bed frame, and $150–$400 for a bunk bed.

Should I tip for furniture assembly?

It's not required. Rounding up or a small tip for a long or awkward job is common.

Will the assembler take the boxes away?

Some do as part of the price, some charge extra, and some don't haul at all. Ask when you book.
