What to know before you book

What the base price covers

A $100–$300 job usually means finding the studs, fixing your mount to them, hanging and leveling the TV and plugging it into a nearby outlet. Cords run down the wall in sight unless you pay to hide them. Retail install services price the same job as a set fee: Best Buy's Geek Squad listed basic mounting for 56"–90" TVs at $179.99 and mounting with wires dressed at $269.99 when we checked in November 2026.

Wall type changes the price

Drywall over wood studs is the cheap case. Brick, stone and concrete need masonry bits and anchors, and a TV over a fireplace means more care with heat, height and cables — $200–$700 in all. Old plaster cracks easily and can add time; metal studs need special anchors. Send a photo of the wall when you ask for a quote.

Hiding the wires

An in-wall power kit runs a rated cord and outlet behind the TV and adds $50–$200 to the job. Never push a regular power cord inside the wall — it isn't rated for it. If you want a real new outlet behind the TV, that's a licensed electrician's job at $150–$350. A stick-on cord cover is the cheapest fix of all.

Size, mount type and extras

Big TVs cost more: 65" and up runs $250–$400. The type of mount changes how long the job takes, so say if yours is a full-motion arm when you ask for a quote. A soundbar, a second TV or a game console shelf on the same visit is usually cheaper than a separate trip.

TV mounting cost: FAQ

Is it worth paying someone to mount a TV?

For most people, yes. At $100–$300 you get the studs found, the TV level and the risk of a dropped TV on someone else.

Does the price include the mount?

Usually not. Most handymen and retail installers expect you to supply the mount; ask before the visit if you want them to bring one.

Can a handyman add an outlet behind my TV?

In most states, a new outlet is electrical work for a licensed electrician ($150–$350). A handyman can fit a rated in-wall power kit, which plugs into an existing outlet, for $50–$200.

How much more is mounting over a fireplace?

Expect $200–$700, against $100–$300 on plain drywall, because of masonry, height and running cables around the firebox.

How long does TV mounting take?

About an hour or less for a standard drywall job. It can take a few hours, depending on the wall, the type of mount and how many TVs you're hanging.
