Does handyman price list for small jobs change by city?
Yes. The same job costs more where labor and rent cost more. Here's how handyman prices in the biggest US metros compare with the US typical of $70/hr.

Either a flat price per job or the hourly rate ($45–$100/hr) with a $75–$200 minimum. The flat prices above already allow for that minimum, which is why even a quick door fix costs $75–$225. Book several jobs together and each one costs less.

Where the license line sits
Each state draws its own line. California, Arizona and Nevada let an unlicensed handyman take jobs under $1,000 that need no permit. Florida's limit is $2,500 and Utah's is $7,000. Michigan requires a license from $600, and Virginia from just over $1,000. Washington, New Jersey and Maryland require a registration or license for almost any paid home repair. New York City licenses home improvement work over $200.
Electrical, plumbing and HVAC work are licensed separately almost everywhere, whatever the price. In Florida, even connecting two wires needs a licensed electrician. Before a faucet, toilet, light or fan swap, check whether your state lets a handyman do it — this is general information, not legal advice.

Jobs to send to a licensed trade
New circuits and outlets, panel work, moving or adding pipes, gas lines, water heaters, anything structural, roofing, and any job that needs a permit. A handyman who offers to do these without a license puts your insurance and your home sale at risk.

How to get the best price
Write one list, take photos, and buy the parts you want before the visit. If the list is long, ask for a half day ($180–$400) instead of separate flat prices.

Handyman price list for small jobs: FAQ
What jobs can a handyman legally do?
Repairs and installs that stay under your state's small-job limit and need no permit: drywall, doors, trim, caulking, assembly, mounting, painting and like-for-like swaps where the state allows. Check your state contractor board for the exact line.
Can a handyman replace a light fixture or ceiling fan?
In many states a like-for-like swap on existing wiring is allowed; in others, including Florida, it's electrician work. Handymen charge $65–$250 for a fixture and $100–$300 for a fan where it's allowed.
Can a handyman replace a toilet or faucet?
Usually a like-for-like swap, yes, where the state allows: $80–$300 for a faucet and $100–$350 for a toilet, with you supplying the fixture. Moving pipes or drains is plumber work.
How much does it cost to patch a hole in drywall?
$60–$250 for a small hole and $200–$850 for a larger patch, before repainting the whole wall.
How much does it cost to install grab bars?
About $100–$350 per bar, fixed into studs or blocking. Tile walls take longer.
What's the cheapest way to get small jobs done?
Put them all on one visit. One $75–$200 minimum or a $180–$400 half day costs less than several separate trips.
