What to know before you book

When it's a real emergency — and when it can wait

Call now if water won't stop after you close the main valve, sewage is backing up into the house, or you smell gas (leave the house and call the gas utility from outside first). Those are worth the after-hours rate.

A dripping faucet, a running toilet or one slow drain can wait. Shut the valve at the fixture and book a weekday visit at $100/hr instead of $125–$300/hr.

What you pay for on an emergency call

Most bills have three parts: an emergency call-out fee ($150–$400), the plumber's time at the after-hours rate, and parts. Many companies quote the call-out and first hour together — $250–$750.

Some companies charge time and a half on weeknights, double on weekends and triple on holidays. That is why the same burst-pipe repair can run $500–$3,250 at night against $250–$2,500 on a weekday.

Save money

How to keep an emergency bill down

Know where your main water valve is before you need it, and the shutoff on your water heater. Closing them turns many emergencies into a weekday repair.

Ask for the call-out fee and the hourly rate on the phone, and whether the fee is credited to the repair. Some maintenance plans waive the after-hours fee for members.

Watch out

Red flags

Be wary of a company that won't name any price on the phone, asks for cash only, or can't give a license number. In a real emergency, it is fine to pay for the call-out and the fix that stops the water, then get a second quote for any bigger work in daylight.

Step by step

What to do in the first 15 minutes

Do these in order. Each one can cut the damage or the bill.

  1. Stop the waterClose the shutoff valve under the fixture. If water still runs, close the main water valve. It is often where the water line comes into the house, or near the water heater or meter.
  2. Make the water heater safeIf the water heater is leaking, close the cold water valve on top of it. Switch off the breaker for an electric heater. Turn a gas heater's control to “off” or “pilot”.
  3. If you smell gas, get outGet everyone outside. Don't switch lights on or off. Call the gas utility or 911 from outside.
  4. Drain the pipesWith the main valve closed, open the lowest faucet in the house. The water left in the pipes runs out there instead of through the leak.
  5. Take photos, then dry outPhotograph the damage for your insurer before you clean up. Then mop, run fans and lift things off wet floors. The EPA says to dry wet areas within 24–48 hours to stop mold.
  6. Ask three prices on the phoneAsk for the call-out fee, tonight's hourly rate, and whether the fee is credited to the repair. Our US range for the call-out fee is $150–$400.

Night, weekend and holiday rates side by side

The later the hour, the more each hour costs. These are our US ranges.

WhenHourly rateHow it is often billed
Weekday, business hours$75–$175/hrStandard rate
Weeknight$125–$300/hrOften time and a half
Weekend$150–$350/hrOften double
Holiday$200–$450/hrOften triple

Most after-hours calls also carry a call-out fee of $150–$400. Some companies quote the call-out and the first hour together: $250–$750.

Worked example

Worked example: a burst pipe on a Saturday night

A sample bill for a copper pipe that split under a sink. The plumber works two hours.

Line itemCost
Emergency call-out fee$200
Labor: 2 hours at a $210/hr weekend rate$420
Parts: pipe, fittings and a new shutoff valve$55
Total$675

Sample numbers only. The same job on a Tuesday morning, with a $125 service call and $110/hr, comes to $400. If the water is off and nothing is leaking, waiting saves that gap. Drywall and drying are extra.

Will home insurance pay for it?

Often it pays for the water damage, but not always for the plumber. A standard homeowners policy covers sudden water from a plumbing system and damage from frozen pipes, says the Insurance Information Institute. It does not cover floods or problems caused by poor upkeep.

Sewer backups are usually left out unless you added backup coverage to your policy, AAA says. Before the plumber leaves, ask for a written note of what failed and why. Keep the invoice and your photos for the claim.

Watch out

Red flags on a late-night call

You are tired and stressed. That is when bad quotes get signed.

  • Won't name a call-out fee or an hourly rate on the phone.
  • The price jumps when they arrive, with no new problem found.
  • Pushes a new water heater, a repipe or a new sewer line at 2 a.m. Stop the water tonight. Get a second quote in daylight.
  • Wants cash only, or full payment before work starts.
  • Can't give a business name, an address and a license number.
  • Bills an “emergency fee” and a call-out fee for the same visit without telling you first.
Checklist

Get ready now, pay less later

Ten minutes now can turn a night call into a weekday repair.

  • Find your main water valve. Tag it so anyone in the house can find it.
  • Check that the valve turns. A stuck valve is worth fixing on a weekday.
  • Learn where the cold water valve and the power or gas switch are on your water heater.
  • Save the number of a licensed plumber who answers at night.
  • Ask your plumber if a yearly plan waives the after-hours fee.
  • Before winter, insulate pipes in the attic, garage and crawl space.
  • In a hard freeze, let a cold faucet drip and open the cabinet doors under sinks.
  • If you travel in winter, keep the heat at 55°F or higher.
  • Check if your home insurance covers sewer backup.

Emergency plumber cost: FAQ

How much does an emergency plumber charge per hour?

$125–$300/hr on weeknights, $150–$350/hr on weekends and $200–$450/hr on holidays. A call-out fee of $150–$400 is usually added.

Is there a call-out fee for an emergency plumber?

Yes, most charge one: $150–$400. Many quote it together with the first hour, at $250–$750.

How much does it cost to fix a burst pipe at night?

About $500–$3,250 for the visit plus the pipe repair. Drywall and water damage are separate. On a weekday the pipe repair alone is $250–$2,500.

What should I do before the emergency plumber arrives?

Close the main water valve, switch off power or gas to the water heater if it is leaking, and move valuables away from the water. Take photos for your insurer.

Can a clogged drain wait until morning?

Usually, yes, if only one fixture is affected — stop using it and book a weekday visit at $100–$350. After hours the same clog costs $300–$800. If several drains back up at once, the main line is probably blocked; call now.

Do plumbers charge more on weekends?

Yes. Weekend rates run $150–$350/hr, against $75–$175/hr on a weekday. Most also add a call-out fee of $150–$400.

How much does an emergency plumber cost on a holiday?

$200–$450/hr, the highest rate of the year. A call-out fee of $150–$400 is usually added, plus parts.

Does homeowners insurance pay for an emergency plumber?

It may pay for water damage from a sudden burst or a frozen pipe. It does not cover floods or wear and tear, and sewer backup often needs an add-on. Call your insurer and keep the plumber's invoice.

Can I thaw a frozen pipe myself?

Often, yes. Keep the faucet open. Warm the pipe with a hair dryer, a heating pad or towels soaked in hot water. Never use an open flame. If you can't find, reach or thaw the frozen spot, call a licensed plumber (American Red Cross).

Is it cheaper to wait for a weekday plumber?

Yes, if the water is off and nothing is leaking. An after-hours call-out and first hour costs $250–$750. On a weekday you pay a $75–$275 service call and $75–$175/hr.
