What to know before you book

Refrigerators and freezers

Most fridge repairs cost $125–$500: an evaporator fan, a defrost heater, a thermostat or a water inlet valve. An ice maker repair is $100–$400. A stand-alone freezer costs $100–$450 to fix.

The big one is the sealed system. A compressor or refrigerant leak repair costs $600–$1,400, and unless the fridge uses isobutane (R-600a), only an EPA-certified technician may do it. On a fridge past about 10 years old, that money usually goes further on a new fridge ($600–$2,300).

Washers and dryers

A washer repair costs $100–$450. Drain pumps, belts, inlet valves, lid switches and drum bearings are the usual parts. A dryer repair costs $100–$400: belts, heating elements, gas igniters and drum rollers.

Many dryer faults start with a clogged vent, which makes the dryer overheat and burn out parts. A vent cleaning costs $80–$250 and is worth doing once a year.

Dishwashers, ovens and stoves

A dishwasher repair costs $100–$350: drain pumps, inlet valves, door latches and heating elements. An oven repair runs $125–$425 and a stove or cooktop $100–$400.

On gas ovens and stoves, a weak igniter is the most common fault, at $150–$300. Newer models with touch controls can need a control board instead, at $200–$750.

Microwaves and disposals

A microwave repair costs $100–$300, worth it for over-the-range and built-in models. A cheap countertop microwave usually isn't worth fixing.

A garbage disposal repair costs $70–$300. A new disposal, installed, is $250–$850, so an old or leaking unit is often better replaced.

High-end brands

Sub-Zero, Wolf, Viking and Thermador repairs cost $300–$1,400. Parts cost more, and many need a technician trained on that brand. These appliances cost far more to replace, so repair usually makes sense for many years.

How much does it cost to fix an ice maker?

$100–$400 for a water valve, control board or motor. Under 5 years old, repairing it is usually cheaper than replacing it.

How much does it cost to replace an oven igniter?

$150–$300 with parts and labor. A weak igniter is the most common reason a gas oven won't heat.

On a newer appliance, usually. A control board runs $200–$750 installed. On an old, cheap appliance, compare that with the price of a new one first.
