What to know before you book

What the service call covers

The fee pays for the trip and for finding the fault. Many companies include up to the first hour of labor. Expect $70–$150; one national chain, Sears Home Services, lists $90–$150, and Puls lists $89.

If you approve the repair, most companies take the fee off the bill. If you say no, you pay the fee only. Ask which way it works before the technician comes.

Compare

Hourly labor vs flat-rate pricing

Some companies bill labor by the hour, $50–$150 past the first hour. Others, like Mr. Appliance, quote one flat price for the whole job before they start.

Flat pricing is easier to compare. Ask for the full price, part and labor, before you say yes.

Emergency and weekend fees

Same-day, evening and weekend visits cost $140–$400, before the repair itself. Pay it only when waiting would cost more, such as a fridge full of food or a leak.

If water is leaking, turn off the water valve behind the appliance and unplug it. Then book the next weekday visit.

Watch out

Red flags

A fee you only learn about at the end, a refusal to say whether it is credited, or a big repair pushed before the technician has looked. Get the diagnosis and the full price in writing first.

Appliance service call fee: FAQ

Is the service call fee credited to the repair?

Usually, yes. Most companies take it off the bill if you book the repair. If you decline, you pay only the fee.

Do I pay the service call if I don't fix the appliance?

Yes. You pay the fee, $70–$150, for the visit and the diagnosis.

How much is an appliance repair technician per hour?

$50–$150 an hour past the first hour. Many companies quote a flat job price instead.

Why is a same-day appliance repair so expensive?

The visit fee is higher: $140–$400 for a same-day, evening or weekend visit, against $70–$150 for a booked weekday visit. The repair is then priced on top.

Is a home warranty service fee the same as a service call?

It works the same way. With a home warranty you pay a service fee of $65–$150 per claim, and the plan covers the covered repair.
