What to know before you book

The 50% rule

If the repair costs more than half the price of a new appliance, replacing it is usually the better buy. Example: half of a typical $1,450 fridge is $725. A $300 fan repair passes; a $950 compressor does not.

Count the whole cost of new: the unit, installation (a washer, dryer or range swap is $100–$300) and haul-away of the old one ($25–$150). Some stores include those with the purchase.

The 10-year rule

Most appliances past about 10 years old are near the end of their life, and a new one comes with a fresh maker's warranty.

It varies by appliance. Most fridges last 10–15 years, washers 10–14, dryers 6–10, microwaves 7–10, and freezers and ovens often longer.

When repair usually wins

Young appliances, cheap parts and high-end brands. A belt, latch or valve on a 4-year-old washer is a clear repair. Sub-Zero, Wolf and Viking repairs ($300–$1,400) still cost far less than replacing a built-in.

When replacing wins

A sealed-system or compressor failure on an old fridge ($600–$1,400), or any repair that costs more than half the price of new on an appliance past about 10 years old.

Before you buy, check whether the old one is under any warranty. A repair the maker or a plan pays for always costs you less than buying new.

Repair or replace an appliance: FAQ

What is the 50% rule for appliances?

If the repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new appliance, replace it instead. Count the new unit's installation and haul-away too.

Is it worth fixing a 10-year-old refrigerator?

For a small fix at $125–$500, often yes. For a compressor at $600–$1,400, usually not: a new mid-range fridge costs $600–$2,300.

Should I repair or replace my washing machine?

Repair one under about 10 years old with a pump, belt or valve problem ($100–$450). A new washer costs $700–$1,300.

How much does it cost to install a new appliance?

For a washer, dryer or range, $100–$300 in labor when the hookups are already there, plus $25–$150 to haul the old one away if the store doesn't include it. A dishwasher hookup is plumbing work: see the plumber cost guide.

Do high-end appliances follow the same rules?

Not really. Repairs cost $300–$1,400, but a new built-in costs many times more, so repair usually makes sense for much longer.
