Does appliance warranty plans change by city?
Yes. The same job costs more where labor and rent cost more. Here's how appliance repair prices in the biggest US metros compare with the US typical of $200.

Sold with a new appliance, an extended warranty costs $100–$400 and adds 3–5 years. Many cover parts but not labor, so read what you pay at each repair.
Consumer Reports advises skipping most extended warranties: the chance of a covered repair in the plan's years is low, and the plan can cost close to what one repair would.
02
Home warranties
A home warranty appliance plan costs $400–$840 a year, and a plan that covers appliances plus heating, cooling, plumbing and electrical systems costs about $600–$900. Each claim adds a service fee of $65–$150.
The warranty company usually picks the technician. American Home Shield, for example, does not let members choose their own. Plans also have caps on what they pay. Read the limits on refrigerators and built-in appliances before you sign.

Is it worth it?
Do the sums. A typical appliance plan at $550 plus two $100 service fees is $750 a year. Paying per repair costs about $200 per repair, so two repairs cost $400. With the plan, each repair costs the $100 fee instead of $200, a saving of $100. The $550 plan only pays off at about 6 or more repairs a year.
A plan makes more sense with several older appliances, or if one big surprise bill would hurt more than steady payments.
04
Maintenance plans
Some repair companies sell yearly maintenance plans for $100–$500: a check-up, cleaning and a tune-up, and sometimes a discount on repairs. Cleaning the dryer vent ($80–$250) and fridge coils yourself does much of the same.
