What to know before you book

What usually comes out, and what doesn't

Fresh food, drink, mud and most pet accidents come out with a normal clean plus spot treatment. Old stains that have sat for weeks, bleach spots, rust and some dyes like red drinks and hair dye may only fade. Bleach and sun fading take the color out of the fiber, so no cleaning can bring it back.

A good cleaner will tell you before they start which spots they expect to come out. Ask for that in writing so you know what you're paying for.

Why pet urine costs more

Urine soaks through the carpet into the pad underneath, and that's where the smell lives. A topical enzyme treatment ($20–$75 a room) handles fresh or light spots. Where it has soaked in, the cleaner floods and pulls the urine back out from below, which costs $75–$275 an area.

If the pad is badly soaked, the honest fix is to lift the carpet and replace that piece of pad, about $150–$400 for heavy pet damage. A whole house with severe, long-term pet odor can run $900–$1,250.

Watch out

Don't make it worse first

Scrubbing spreads a stain and fuzzes the fibers. Soapy home cleaners leave sticky residue that grabs dirt, and some odor sprays just cover the smell. Blot with cold water and a white towel, then call a pro if it's still there.

Compare

Deodorizer and protector: worth it?

Deodorizer ($15–$40 a room) helps with light, general odors but won't fix urine in the pad. Protector ($10–$50 a room) makes the next spill easier to blot up. Some companies build both into a package price, so ask before you pay extra.

Pet urine and stain removal cost: FAQ

How much does pet urine removal from carpet cost?

$20–$75 a room for an enzyme treatment, or $75–$275 an area when urine has soaked into the pad.

Can professional cleaning remove old pet urine smell?

Often, if the cleaner treats the pad, not just the top of the carpet. If the pad and floor underneath are badly soaked, that piece of pad may need replacing.

How much does it cost to remove one carpet stain?

About $25–$100 a stain, as an add-on to a normal clean.

Will a stain come back after cleaning?

Sometimes. Soap left behind or a spill that reached the pad can wick back up as the carpet dries. Ask for a free re-clean guarantee in writing.

Do I need to replace carpet with pet urine damage?

Not always. Deep extraction ($75–$275 an area) fixes many cases. Replace the pad in the worst spots before you replace the whole carpet.
