Does ev charger in a detached garage change by city?
Yes. The same job costs more where labor and rent cost more. Here's how EV charger prices in the biggest US metros compare with the US typical of $1700.

The power has to go underground. That means digging a trench, laying conduit, pulling heavy wire and restoring the lawn or path. At $12–$40 per foot, a 60-foot run adds about $1,500 to a $1,700 charger job.
Long runs lose voltage, so the electrician may need thicker wire than a short run inside the house. That is part of why the per-foot price rises with distance.
02
Trench depth and digging
The electrical code sets how deep the wire must go, and it depends on the conduit. Typical depths are 6 inches for rigid metal conduit, 18 inches for PVC conduit and 24 inches for direct-burial cable. Your inspector has the final say.
Call 811 a few days before anyone digs, so buried gas, power and water lines get marked. Driveways, patios and tree roots add cost. Boring under concrete costs more than an open trench across a lawn.

Compare
Subpanel or a single circuit?
If the charger is the only thing the garage needs, one circuit is enough. If you also want lights, outlets or a workshop, a subpanel ($600–$2,500) feeds everything and saves digging twice. Budget $2,300–$7,600 for the 60-foot trench, subpanel and charger together.
No garage at all? A driveway post adds $500–$2,000, and the charger must be rated for outdoor use.
04
Permits and paperwork
Plan on a permit and inspection ($50–$350, up to $700 in a few cities), and often an open-trench inspection before backfill. Get the trench length, depth, conduit type and who restores the yard written into the quote.
The federal 30C home charger credit ended for chargers placed in service after June 30, 2026. If your utility pays a charger or wiring rebate, check whether trenching counts before you sign.

EV charger in a detached garage: FAQ
How much does it cost to put an EV charger in a detached garage?
About $1,700–$5,100 for a garage 60 feet from the house, charger included. Closer is cheaper: $1,350–$3,900 at 30 feet.
How much does trenching for an EV charger cost per foot?
$12–$40 per foot with conduit and wire. Concrete, rock and long runs that need thicker wire sit at the top of that range.
How deep does the wire to a detached garage need to be?
It depends on the conduit: about 6 inches for rigid metal conduit, 18 inches for PVC and 24 inches for direct-burial cable under the electrical code. Your local inspector decides.
Do I need a subpanel in my detached garage for an EV charger?
Not for the charger alone. A subpanel ($600–$2,500) makes sense if the garage also needs lights, outlets or tools, so you only dig once.
Is an outdoor post cheaper than wiring a detached garage?
Sometimes. A driveway post adds $500–$2,000 but can be closer to the panel than the garage, so the trench is shorter.
