A 200-amp panel upgrade costs $1,500–$4,500 in 2026, and about $2,500 is typical. With the charger, the whole job runs $2,500–$7,200. Many homes don't need one: a load management device at $400–$1,500 lets a full panel run a charger.
Load management instead: $400–$1,500, or $1,400–$4,200 with the charger
Upgrades that also need a new meter or service drop: $3,500–$7,500

Does panel upgrade for an ev charger change by city?
Yes. The same job costs more where labor and rent cost more. Here's how EV charger prices in the biggest US metros compare with the US typical of $1700.
EV charger prices in the 12 biggest US metrosEach city's typical EV charger price against the US typical of $1,700.
An electrician runs a load calculation: it adds up your home's big loads (heat, AC, range, dryer, water heater) and checks how much is left for a charger. Many 200-amp homes have room for a 40- to 60-amp circuit. Many 100-amp homes don't.
Get the result in writing. A quote that jumps straight to a panel upgrade without a load calculation is the most common way homeowners overpay.

Load management: the cheaper fix
A load management device ($400–$1,500) watches the home's total draw and slows or pauses the charger when the house is busy. Overnight, that rarely matters. Some smart chargers can do this with a sensor kit, and a smart splitter (about $399) can share an existing dryer outlet.
With the charger included, load management jobs run $1,400–$4,200, against $2,500–$7,200 for the same charger with a panel upgrade.
03
What a panel upgrade includes
A new 200-amp panel and main breaker, moving the circuits across, the permit and inspection, and the utility disconnect and reconnect. Most take a day, plus utility scheduling. If the meter socket or service drop must change too, expect $3,500–$7,500.
Older panels from brands with known problems, or homes with 60- to 100-amp service, are the most likely to need it. The new panel also leaves room for a heat pump or solar later.

Watch out
Rebates and red flags
Some utilities help with panel costs for income-qualified homes, for example Southern California Edison's Charge Ready Home program in 2026. Check your utility before you sign.
Red flags: no load calculation, no permit, or a quote that bundles the panel and charger without separate prices. The federal 30C home charger credit ended for chargers placed in service after June 30, 2026, so ignore any quote that still promises it.

Panel upgrade for an EV charger: FAQ
How much does a panel upgrade for an EV charger cost?
$1,500–$4,500 for a 200-amp upgrade, with $2,500 typical. With a new meter socket or service drop it can reach $3,500–$7,500.
Can I install a Level 2 charger on a 100-amp panel?
Often, yes. A load calculation decides it. If the panel is tight, a smaller circuit or a load management device ($400–$1,500) usually works without an upgrade.
What is cheaper, load management or a panel upgrade?
Load management, by a lot: $400–$1,500 against $1,500–$4,500 for an upgrade. An upgrade makes sense when you also plan a heat pump, solar or a second EV.
How long does a panel upgrade take?
Usually one day of work. Utility scheduling for the disconnect and reconnect can add days or weeks, depending on your utility.
Does a panel upgrade need a permit?
Yes, in practically every US city. Budget $50–$350, up to $700 in a few cities for the permit and inspection, and a licensed electrician to pull it.
