Does garage door opener cost change by city?
Yes. The same job costs more where labor and rent cost more. Here's how garage door repair prices in the biggest US metros compare with the US typical of $275.
Garage door repair prices in the 12 biggest US metrosEach city's typical garage door repair price against the US typical of $275.
Drive type comes first. A chain-drive unit costs $150–$250 and is the loudest; belt drive is $160–$350 and much quieter; direct drive is $280–$500. A wall-mount (jackshaft) model sits beside the door and costs $650–$1,150 installed.
Then labor and wiring. Labor alone is $150–$400 for two to six hours. If there's no outlet near the ceiling, electrical work adds $150–$350.
02
Smart openers and battery backup
A smart opener with Wi-Fi and battery backup costs $550–$1,000 installed. It lets you open, close and check the door from your phone, and keeps working in a power outage. A battery backup on its own is $50–$150.
In California, battery backup is the law: since July 1, 2019, every residential opener sold or installed must have one, and a new door can't be hooked to an old opener without it. The fine is $1,000 per opener.

Compare
Repair or replace the opener?
An opener repair, such as a gear kit, circuit board or remote, costs $100–$400. Replace the opener when the repair costs more than half the price of a new one, or when it's old enough to lack safety sensors.
A new standard opener at $500 typical is often the better buy on an old, noisy unit.
04
Watch out
Safety rules
Federal safety rules have required every residential opener made since January 1, 1993 to reverse when it hits something and to have an extra safety device, such as photo-eye sensors, or a hold-to-close wall button.
The safety commission advises testing the reverse every month. If the door doesn't reverse when it touches something, stop using the opener and have it checked. A sensor fix costs $85–$250.
