What to know before you book

Compare

Torsion or extension: which do you have?

Torsion springs sit on a metal bar above the closed door. Most two-car doors use them, and a pair costs $200–$500 to replace. Extension springs stretch along the tracks on each side, mostly on lighter or older doors, and a pair costs $120–$350.

Torsion springs are rated for about 10,000–20,000 cycles, or 8–15 years. Extension springs are rated for about 8,000–15,000 cycles, or 7–12 years. A cycle is one open and one close.

Compare

One spring or both?

Most doors have two torsion springs that were fitted at the same time. When one breaks, the other is close behind, so most techs replace both. One spring costs $140–$300; both cost $200–$500, which is cheaper than a second visit later.

Worn cables often go with old springs. Doing springs and cables together runs $200–$500.

Why not do it yourself

A spring holds the full weight of the door under high tension. The garage door makers' trade group says spring systems are dangerous and should be repaired only by trained pros, and that cables under spring tension should be replaced only by a trained tech.

The parts are cheap, $30–$100 for a torsion spring, but winding one needs the right bars and the right size spring for your door. Don't open a door with a broken spring, by hand or with the opener.

High-cycle springs and conversions

High-cycle springs are thicker and last two to three times longer than standard ones. They add $40–$100 to a pair, which pays off if the door is your main entry and runs many times a day.

An older door on extension springs can be converted to torsion springs for $400–$825. Torsion springs are rated for more cycles (about 10,000–20,000 against 8,000–15,000), so they last longer.

Save money

Emergency calls and how to keep the bill down

A night, weekend or holiday call adds $100–$300, so a spring job comes to $300–$800. If the car isn't trapped, book a weekday visit.

Ask for the service call fee ($50–$150) up front, and whether it's waived if you go ahead. Ask what cycle rating the new springs carry and how long the warranty lasts.

Garage door spring replacement cost: FAQ

How much does it cost to replace garage door springs?

$200–$500 for both torsion springs on one door, about $300 typical. Extension springs run $120–$350 a pair.

Should I replace both garage door springs?

Yes, in most cases. They wear at the same rate, so the second one usually fails soon after the first. One spring is $140–$300; both are $200–$500.

How long do garage door springs last?

Torsion springs: about 10,000–20,000 cycles, or 8–15 years. Extension springs: about 8,000–15,000 cycles, or 7–12 years.

Is it worth converting extension springs to torsion?

Often, on a door you plan to keep. It costs $400–$825, and torsion springs are rated for more cycles, about 10,000–20,000 against 8,000–15,000.

Can I open my garage door with a broken spring?

Don't. The opener isn't built to lift the full weight of the door, and the door can drop. Call a technician.
