What to know before you book

Watch out

If you smell gas, do this first

Leave the house, don't flip switches or light anything, and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. Gas utilities answer leak calls around the clock and can shut off the gas to a leaking line or appliance.

The utility makes it safe; the repair on your side of the meter is yours to arrange. That's where a licensed plumber comes in, at $150–$900 for a typical fix.

What drives the price

Location is everything. A leak at a fitting or connector behind an appliance is often a $120–$250 fix. Inside a wall or crawlspace it's $270–$760, plus patching. A buried yard line can reach $1,500–$5,000 once digging and restoration are added.

Damaged pipe is replaced by the foot at $15–$35. Old steel pipe that leaks in several places can make a whole-home repipe ($3,000–$7,000) the better buy.

How plumbers find the leak

Plumbers use a gas detector, soapy water on joints and a pressure test. A standard test runs $75–$400; some cities or jobs need an extended 12–24 hour test at $150–$500.

After a repair, the line should be tested again before the gas goes back on. Ask for that in writing.

Watch out

Red flags

Be wary of a quote to replace all the piping without showing you where the leak is, or a repair with no pressure test afterward.

Gas work is licensed work. Ask for the license number, and whether a permit is needed for the repair in your city.
