Does propane to natural gas conversion cost change by city?
Yes. The same job costs more where labor and rent cost more. Here's how gas line prices in the biggest US metros compare with the US typical of $650.

The gas utility runs a service line from the main to your home and sets a meter. A licensed plumber then ties your house piping into the meter, and each appliance is converted by changing its burner orifices and regulator setting. The utility turns the gas on after the work passes inspection.
Each appliance conversion costs about $100–$600. Some appliances, often water heaters, can't be converted and must be replaced; National Fuel's planning calculator uses about $1,000 for a new tank water heater (our water heater guide puts a gas tank at $1,100–$3,100 installed, $2,000 typical) and $3,500 for a furnace.
02
Why the piping may change
Natural gas is delivered at a lower pressure than propane, so the same appliances often need bigger pipe. Your plumber should size the system for natural gas rather than reuse propane piping without checking.
Moving the gas entry from the propane tank side of the house to the new meter usually means a short new run, $300–$1,500, plus a pressure test ($75–$400).
03
Utility costs and the old tank
Many utilities run the service line free when the meter is within an allowance, often about 100 feet of the street; longer or harder services can cost up to $10,000. A meter install may cost $0–$425 where it isn't included.
A leased propane tank is the supplier's to remove, so call them. Removing or abandoning a tank you own costs $300–$1,500; buried tanks sit at the top of that range.
04
Permits and timing
Expect a gas permit ($50–$350) and an inspection before the utility turns the gas on. Don't convert appliances before the switch-over date: they need to stay on propane until natural gas arrives.
Compare your local propane and natural gas prices before deciding. Where natural gas is available, it's usually cheaper per unit of heat, but the savings depend on your rates and how much gas you use.
