Does outdoor gas line cost change by city?
Yes. The same job costs more where labor and rent cost more. Here's how gas line prices in the biggest US metros compare with the US typical of $650.
Gas line prices in the 12 biggest US metrosEach city's typical gas line price against the US typical of $650.
Distance and digging. A quick-connect outlet where gas pipe already runs on an outside wall is $250–$800; a buried line across the yard to a fire pit is $400–$2,000. Each foot of buried polyethylene with trenching adds $20–$50.
Hard surfaces add cost. Boring under a driveway runs $10–$30 a foot, and patching concrete $100–$400 for a small area.

Depth and pipe rules
Model codes call for buried gas pipe at least 12 inches below grade. A single line to an outdoor grill or light can be as shallow as 8 inches where the inspector approves and the line is safe from damage.
Plastic gas pipe is allowed outdoors and underground only, with a tracer wire so it can be found later and approved metal risers where it comes out of the ground. Local codes can add to these rules, so the plumber and inspector have the final word.
03
Standby generators need more gas
A whole-home generator burns far more gas than a grill, so its line is usually bigger and the meter may be too small. Some utilities upgrade the meter for a fee, which can add $250–$2,000.
Call the gas utility before you buy the generator. The line itself costs $500–$3,000, and doing it with any other outdoor gas work saves a second permit ($50–$350).

Watch out
Before anyone digs
Call 811 a few working days before digging. It's free, and the utilities mark their buried lines so nobody hits one.
In cold climates, schedule outdoor gas work for spring through fall. Frozen ground makes trenching slower and dearer.

Outdoor gas line cost: FAQ
How much does it cost to run a gas line to a grill?
$400–$2,000 for a buried line with risers and a shutoff. If gas pipe already runs on the outside wall near the patio, a quick-connect outlet is $250–$800.
How deep does an outdoor gas line need to be?
At least 12 inches under model codes, or 8 inches for a single line to a grill or outdoor light where approved. Your local code may differ.
Can I convert my propane grill to natural gas?
Many grills can be converted with the maker's kit, which changes the burner orifices and regulator. Use the kit made for your grill, and have the hookup leak-tested.
What does a gas line to a pool heater cost?
$500–$2,000 for the line. Pool heaters use a lot of gas, so pipe size matters as much as distance.
Do I need a permit for an outdoor gas line?
Usually yes. New gas piping needs a licensed pro, a permit ($50–$350) and a pressure test in most US cities.
