Does gas range and dryer hookup cost change by city?
Yes. The same job costs more where labor and rent cost more. Here's how gas line prices in the biggest US metros compare with the US typical of $650.
Gas line prices in the 12 biggest US metrosEach city's typical gas line price against the US typical of $650.
A standard hookup at $125–$450 covers disconnecting the old appliance, fitting a new flexible gas connector, checking or replacing the shutoff valve, connecting, testing every joint for leaks and checking the burners light properly. Most hookups take 30 minutes to 2 hours.
Ask for a new connector rather than reusing the old one. Connectors are cheap, and an old one that has been bent behind a range for years is a common leak point.
02
When you need a new line, not just a hookup
If there is no capped gas valve behind the appliance, you need a new branch from the nearest gas pipe. For a short run that's $300–$1,500, so a new line plus a range hookup lands at $425–$1,950 and a dryer at $400–$1,850.
An electric range can't be converted to gas. Switching means buying a gas range and running a line to it. A gas dryer also needs a standard power outlet for its drum and controls.
03
Wall ovens and cooktops
A gas wall oven hookup runs $150–$600. It costs more than a freestanding range because the oven sits in a cabinet and the connection is harder to reach; cabinet changes add more.
Gas cooktops connect like a range, at $125–$450 on an existing line. Islands are the exception: a new line under the floor to an island often costs near the top of the $300–$1,500 short-run range.
04
Permits and licensing
New gas piping needs a licensed plumber or gas fitter and, in most US cities, a permit ($50–$350) and a pressure test. A straight swap onto an existing valve often needs no permit, but rules vary, so ask your building department.
Even where a homeowner may legally connect an appliance, a leak is dangerous. A pro will leak-test every joint and check the appliance is set for your gas type.
05
Save money
How to save
Book the range and dryer together so one visit and one service fee ($75–$275) covers both. If you're buying a new appliance, ask whether the store's installers do gas hookups and what they leave out.
Measure before you buy. A range that lines up with the existing valve is a simple hookup; moving it a few feet means a new line.

Gas range and dryer hookup cost: FAQ
How long does it take to hook up a gas stove?
Usually 30 minutes to 2 hours if the gas valve is already behind the stove. A new line adds 2–4 hours.
Can I convert my electric dryer or range to gas?
No. You buy a gas model and run a gas line to it. With a short new line, a dryer costs about $400–$1,850 installed, before the dryer itself.
Do I need a new gas connector for a new range?
Most installers fit a new one. They are cheap, and an old connector that has been bent and moved is a common source of leaks.
Does a gas dryer need electricity?
Yes. A gas dryer uses gas for heat but needs a standard outlet for the drum, fan and controls. It also needs a vent to the outside; a new vent runs $140–$600.
Is a permit needed to hook up a gas range?
For new gas piping, almost always. For a straight swap onto an existing valve, often not, but it depends on your city. A gas permit typically costs $50–$350.
